Houston County, as a policy, waives the fees associated with construction projects for churches.
The Houston County YMCA asked that its fees be waived for its renovation project of the 2954 Moody Road building. It includes new restrooms, kids’ day care area and the showers/lockers for men and women.
All work is being done within the existing building, with no change in the building’s footprint. County Building Official Tim Andrews said proba;lbly two building permits would still be needs as there are two phases to the project.
The commissioners voted unanimously to waive the fees for the non-profit organization, but noted the action does not set a precedent for others. “We have to look at each request on a case by case basis, said Commissioner Jay Walker.
When told what YMCA is short for – Young Men’s Christian Center – County Administrator Steve Engle admitted he “did not know that” and told the board it “did not need to vote on” the request since the YMCA already qualifies as a religious organization.
International City Builders and volunteers are doing the renovation work. The first phase includes additional bathrooms and working space for needed daycare, both in the unfinished area at the rear of the facility. The daycare facility would qualify for the state pre-K program.
The second phase includes renovation of the exiting bathrooms to make the facility more modern and functional which will help the YMCA attract more members, according to the request. The Houston County YMCA is having a Renovation Celebration during the construction to attract new members and is waiving the $85 Joiner Fee for a limited time.
The YMCA also has a couple of camps coming up, and registration is now open for the One Day School Holiday Camp on March 12 and the Spring Break Camp April 2-6. For more information, call the Houston County YMCA at 922-2566
